Data center solution provider Digital Realty and energy utility Vattenfall have initiated a cooperation to start measuring 24/7 hourly renewable energy matching to Digital Realty’s six data centers in Stockholm.
In Sweden, Digital Realty, a global provider of cloud- and carrier-neutral data centers, colocation, and interconnection solutions, has partnered with Vattenfall to join a program that matches renewable energy consumption with production on an hourly basis. Digital Realty has since 2015 had a cooperation with Vattenfall and now will the energy used by Digital Realty's six data centers across Stockholm be measured by smart meters to facilitate hourly matching of renewable energy in near real-time.
“We are very happy to support Digital Realty in reaching their ambitious sustainability goals and the work towards fossil freedom. 24/7 matching really shows how new digital solutions and technology can be used to provide total transparency. 24/7 matching gives us the possibility to offer our customers specific data with unique precision, that can support them in their environmental efforts and communication,” says Andreas Regnell, Head of Strategic Development at Vattenfall.
A new level of transparency
By aligning energy usage with renewable production, it highlights the importance of data center demand as a driver of the broader renewable energy transition. It also gives Digital Realty the ability to choose the specific renewable energy sources they want to use.
"With 24/7 matching we’re bringing a new level of transparency to our energy consumption and renewable energy procurement," said Aaron Binkley, Vice President of Sustainability, Digital Realty. "With 24/7 matching, we are innovating how we track and manage renewable energy use to drive impact with, ensuring that every step of our journey is clear and accountable. This is a significant step forward in our mission to create a more sustainable future."
