"Data centers have immense potential to contribute to a more stable European power grid. A data center's battery capacity, designed to handle temporary power outages, represents an energy resource that is largely untapped today. According to McKinsey, the data center capacity in Europe currently stands at 10,000 MW and is expected to grow to 35,000 MW by 2030—equivalent to approximately the same amount in installed battery capacity. This capacity could also be utilized to support the power grid," says Staffan Stymne, CEO and co-founder of T.Loop.
T.Loop and E-matic are now launching TSO Link, a solution for providing balancing services to the Nordic power grid. The goal is to unlock unused energy resources, contributing to a more stable energy market. The unique aspect of TSO Link lies in its ability to make existing energy resources available for balancing markets. The jointly owned company is initially targeting data centers, which possess large amounts of unused capacity. By connecting these data centers to the balancing market, TSO Link enables them to generate new revenue streams while simultaneously helping stabilize the energy system.
The technical platform is flexible and will be adapted to manage various types of resources across multiple industries.
"For a long time, we searched for a partner who could help us utilize our excess capacity for grid balancing. The challenge is to prioritize uninterrupted power supply for our IT customers while maximizing energy efficiency. When we couldn’t find a solution, we decided to build it ourselves, leveraging our expertise in both data centers and the energy sector. It’s exciting to offer TSO Link to the data center industry, enabling others to contribute their energy resources to society. We must work together to achieve the green transition," says Mathias Lindqvist, co-founder and CTO of T.Loop.
"By combining our strengths — T.Loop’s expertise in data centers and balancing markets, and E-matic’s knowledge in hardware and software development — we have solved the challenge of maintaining IT customers' operational reliability while also using reserve capacity for balancing services," says Robin Ronan, co-founder and CTO of E-matic.
TSO Link has developed hardware and software tailored specifically for grid balancing in data center environments. T.Loop’s Data Energy Centers® are the first to utilize these balancing services. The rollout will then expand gradually to the entire data center industry.
TSO Link’s balancing service is also suitable for other mission-critical environments, such as energy and industrial companies, where core operations must always remain a top priority.
