Interxion, now part of Digital Realty, is opening the first phase of its sixth data center on its campus in Stockholm. The new data center STO6 is Interxion's largest investment to date in Sweden and, when fully expanded, it will be 3,300 m2.
Data center campus Kista
STO6 is built in a separate property directly adjacent to Interxion's current data center campus in Kista outside Stockholm and lives up to the Protection Class 3 defined by MSB. In total, Interxion's campus will have over 10,000 sqm of productive data center space distributed over the six data halls.
Stockholm is closing in on FLAD
It is international companies' demand for Stockholm as a gateway market to reach users in the Nordic countries as well as in the Baltics and Russia, together with an increased local demand for connected high-security data centers that is the basis for the major investment.
In a press release Peder Bank, Nordic Manager at Interxion explains: "Sweden is consistently ranked among the world's three best economies for network readiness by the World Economic Forum, and Stockholm is the most advantageous strategic location for reaching Northern Europe, Russia and the Baltic states. It is therefore no wonder that we are seeing an increasing international demand to place with us in Stockholm and distribute their services from here. We also see an increased demand from local companies with specific requirements for high availability and security"
Heating Stockholmers' homes
Stockholm City Councilor Anna König Jerlmyr, who participated in the inauguration, comments on the opening of STO6: "Stockholm has high goals of becoming a smart and connected city. Reaching them requires a connected infrastructure that can handle all data and traffic in a fast and secure way. STO6 is the type of data center needed to meet the digital challenges of the future in terms of connection, but also environmentally because the waste heat from the data center will be used to heat Stockholmers' homes"
100% renewable energy
Interxion worked actively with various initiatives to contribute to a more balanced and sustainable society. Since 2015, Interxion Sweden has had a collaboration with Stockholm Exergi, which means that waste heat is returned to the district heating network. With STO6, Interxion takes another step in the investment through a large investment in its own heat pumps - which means that Interxion Stockholm can supply even warmer water to the district heating network and thus contributes to heating even more apartments with surplus heat from the data center.
STO6 is designed according to the latest standards for energy efficiency, and just like in all of Interxion's data centers in Europe, only 100 percent renewable energy is used.
