As planned, IRIS, Farice's subsea cable connecting Iceland with Dublin, is now ready for service.
Örn Orrason, VP of Sales and business development at Farice ehf, said on LinkedIn: "This is an important milestone. Now Dublin is our nearest neighbor followed by Copenhagen and Hamburg. The IRIS submarine cable is ready for service (RFS). The cable is Farice’ third submarine cable connecting Iceland with Dublin and will further increase redundancy and resilience in digital communication in the north-west Atlantic."
Ready to carry traffic
"The RFS date is the last milestone and marks the completion of a project that was four years in development", said Orrason. "The IRIS project started early 2019 with preparation work including finding suitable landing sites and good marine route. The marine route was surveyed in 2020 and 2021 and the cable manufactured in 2021 and 2022. Landing of the cable in Iceland took place on May 23rd 2022 with final splice off the coast of Ireland early August. The cable was tested by manufacturer last autumn before being delivered to Farice in November. Farice’ technical team has since worked on integration of the submarine system with Farice’ network. The integration work is now completed and the system is now ready to carry traffic between Iceland and Dublin."
