In 2024, evroc will establish a pilot center in the Stockholm region, while initiating a site selection process to determine the location of its first hyperscale data centers and additional software development hubs. Evroc plans to build eight hyperscale centers and three development hubs across Europe by 2028, employing over 3,000 people in total.
Europe is about to take a giant leap toward digital sovereignty, thanks to evroc's new initiative to build Europe's first secure, sovereign, and sustainable hyperscale cloud. This ambitious move will help the continent regain control over its digital economy and significantly reduce the influence of foreign cloud providers.
Evroc, founded in 2022, has revealed its roadmap to build a chain of eight hyperscale data centers and three software development hubs across Europe by 2028. With this, the company plans to generate more than 3,000 jobs, bolstering the local economies. These plans follow a successful seed funding round backed by global technology investor EQT Ventures and impact investor Norrsken VC.
Mattias Åström, the founder and CEO of evroc, emphasized the urgency of the project. "The absence of a home-grown hyperscale cloud provider poses a serious challenge for Europe," he said. "Our citizens' data is controlled by foreign entities operating under laws that are often in conflict with European privacy legislation. This threatens our long-term competitiveness in a digital world. Our digital economy must stand on a European foundation."
Over the last five years, the European cloud market has grown five-fold, while the market share of European cloud players has dwindled from 27% to 13%. Evroc aims to reverse this trend, making Europe a leader in cloud technologies. Ted Persson, Partner at EQT Ventures, shared his enthusiasm: "Evroc has an exciting opportunity to gather the brightest minds and ambitious thinkers of Europe. We believe the next generation of European tech companies will be built on evroc's cloud services."
However, evroc's plans go beyond reclaiming the digital territory. The company intends to set a new standard for environmental responsibility in the data center industry, which currently accounts for about 3% of global electricity supply and 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Evroc aims to build the world's most sustainable cloud, using innovative energy-efficient technologies and a unique eco load balancer solution that directs data based on the availability of renewable energy.
Tove Larsson, Partner at Norrsken VC, added: "Data processing will continue to grow substantially over the coming decades, causing significant emissions and damage to our climate unless we change direction. Evroc’s holistic strategy for clean energy usage could set the standard for the entire industry."
As a first step toward actualizing these plans, evroc will pilot its software stack with selected key customers from government, military, financial services, and automotive sectors this year. By 2024, the company plans to establish a pilot center in Stockholm and begin the site selection process for its first two hyperscale centers and software development hubs.
